The Rwenzori Mountains are stunning. That much is not a secret. Rising from Uganda’s western border, draped in montane forest and cloud, they have drawn explorers and adventurers for centuries. But sometimes the most memorable part of a journey isn’t the landscape — it’s the people who share it with you.
That’s exactly what Janez and Florine discovered on their recent trek with us.
A Different Kind of Adventure
What struck them most wasn’t just the beauty of the mountains. It was seeing how deeply the local community is woven into everything we do — from the guides who lead the way to the porters who carry the load. For Janez and Florine, this created something rare: an adventure that was also a cultural education.
“What made the experience particularly special for us was seeing how closely the local community is involved in the business,” they wrote. “This gave us a wonderful opportunity not only to explore the mountains, but also to learn more about the local culture and communities through the conversations we had with our guides and porters.”
Jerome and Musabe: Guides Extraordinaire
Their trek was led by Jerome and Musabe, two of our finest mountain guides. The two complemented each other perfectly — attentive to safety, knowledgeable about the Rwenzori’s remarkable flora and fauna, and genuinely invested in making the experience unforgettable. Janez and Florine describe them as “wonderful ambassadors for the Rwenzori Mountains and the local community.”
Jerome, it turns out, is also an exceptional camp cook — no small thing when you’re days into the mountains and hungry after a long day on the trail.
Musabe: The Conversations You Take Home
But it was Musabe who made a particularly lasting impression. His warmth, his curiosity, and his willingness to share — stories about the company, the surrounding communities, and Ugandan culture — turned every hour on the trail into something richer.
“Musabe was extremely engaging and talkative, and we learned so much from him,” Janez and Florine said. “The conversations we had with him were one of the highlights of our 16-day trip in Uganda. We are taking home many interesting stories and anecdotes thanks to him.”
That is the Rwenzori experience at its best: a mountain journey that becomes a human one.
